Asphalt Calculator — Hot-Mix Blacktop Tonnage by Area & Depth
The tonnage math paving contractors use to order hot-mix blacktop
Asphalt — also called blacktop or hot-mix asphalt (HMA) — is sold and delivered by the ton, but you measure a driveway, parking lot or road patch in feet. This calculator bridges that gap: it turns your length, width and paving depth into the tonnage you actually have to order, so you neither run a truck short mid-pour nor pay for a half-load of mix you can't use.
The math is a two-step volume-to-weight conversion. First find the volume in cubic feet, then multiply by the density of compacted hot-mix asphalt.
Volume (cu ft) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft). Depth is almost always given in inches, so convert it first: a 3-inch lift is 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
Weight: compacted hot-mix asphalt weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot (roughly 3,915 lb — just under 2 tons — per cubic yard). Multiply volume by 145 to get pounds, then divide by 2,000 to get US tons:
Tons = (length × width × depth in ft) × 145 ÷ 2,000.
Work the standard example: a 100 ft × 10 ft driveway paved 3 inches deep is 100 × 10 × 0.25 = 250 cu ft. That's 250 × 145 = 36,250 lb, and 36,250 ÷ 2,000 = 18.1 tons before waste.
Depth drives everything. A residential driveway is typically paved 2–3 inches of surface course; a parking lot or a road carrying heavy traffic uses thicker lifts (often 3–4 in of binder plus a surface course). Doubling the depth doubles the tonnage, so confirm the spec before you order.
Real jobs never use exactly the calculated amount. Plan for 5–10% waste for the truck tailgate, hand-raked edges, uneven subgrade and the cold material left in the spreader. This calculator adds your waste factor and then rounds the order up — you can't take delivery of a fractional ton, and a plant minimum or a short trailer load is a real cost. Enter a price per ton (delivered hot-mix typically runs roughly $100–$200/ton depending on oil prices and haul distance) and it returns an estimated material cost alongside the tonnage and cubic yards.

📰 Formula
• Depth in feet = depth (in) ÷ 12 • Volume (cu ft) = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) • Cubic yards = volume (cu ft) ÷ 27 • Tons = volume (cu ft) × density ÷ 2,000 • With waste: order tons = tons × (1 + waste% ÷ 100), rounded up • Material constants: – Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) density ≈ 145 lb per cubic foot – 1 cubic yard ≈ 3,915 lb ≈ 1.96 tons of compacted asphalt – 1 US ton = 2,000 lb – Typical paving depth: 2–3 in driveway, 3–4 in parking lot / road

⚠️ Common mistakes
- Entering depth in inches but not converting to feet — a 3 in lift is 0.25 ft, not 3.
- Forgetting the 5–10% waste for tailgate, edges and material left in the spreader.
- Using cubic yards as if they were tons — a cubic yard of asphalt is about 1.96 tons, not 1.
- Mixing length in feet with width or depth in inches in the same volume calculation.
- Ordering the exact calculated tonnage instead of rounding up to a whole, deliverable load.
💡 Tips
- Confirm the paving depth with your contractor first — depth, not area, is what usually surprises the budget.
- Use 2–3 in for a residential driveway surface and 3–4 in for lots and roads that carry trucks.
- Asphalt density varies a little by mix (140–150 lb/cu ft); 145 is a safe planning average.
- Order asphalt the morning of the pour — hot-mix must be laid and compacted while it's still hot.
- Add a little extra rather than a little less; a second short delivery costs more than the leftover mix.

❓ Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much asphalt I need?
Multiply length × width × depth in feet to get cubic feet, then multiply by 145 lb/cu ft and divide by 2,000 to get tons. A 100 ft × 10 ft driveway at 3 in (0.25 ft) deep is 250 cu ft = 18.1 tons before waste.
How many tons of asphalt are in a cubic yard?
About 1.96 tons. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, and at 145 lb/cu ft that's roughly 3,915 lb, which divided by 2,000 lb per ton is about 1.96 tons of compacted hot-mix asphalt.
How much does a ton of asphalt cover?
It depends on depth. One ton is about 0.51 cubic yards (13.8 cu ft) of mix, so at 2 inches deep it covers roughly 83 sq ft, and at 3 inches deep about 55 sq ft. Thicker lifts cover less area per ton.
How thick should a driveway be paved?
A residential asphalt driveway is usually 2 to 3 inches of compacted surface over a 4–8 inch gravel base. Parking lots and roads that carry trucks use thicker lifts, often 3–4 inches of asphalt or more.
How much does asphalt weigh per cubic foot?
Compacted hot-mix asphalt weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot. The exact figure varies with the mix design and aggregate, usually between 140 and 150 lb/cu ft, so 145 is a reliable planning average.
How much does a ton of asphalt cost?
Delivered hot-mix asphalt commonly runs about $100 to $200 per ton, swinging with crude-oil prices and haul distance from the plant. Enter your local price per ton in the calculator to get a material cost estimate.
Why do I need to add a waste factor?
Some mix is always lost to the truck tailgate, hand-raked edges, an uneven subgrade and material that cools in the spreader. Adding 5–10% waste keeps you from coming up short, since a second short delivery costs far more than the leftover.
How do I figure asphalt for an irregular lot?
Split the area into rectangles, calculate the tonnage for each, and add them together. For the depth, use the planned compacted lift thickness in inches and let the calculator convert it to feet.
Is hot-mix asphalt the same as blacktop?
Yes — blacktop is the everyday name for hot-mix asphalt (HMA), the aggregate-and-bitumen mix that paving crews lay hot and roll smooth. This calculator uses the standard 145 lb/cu ft density for compacted hot-mix.
