📌 About Salary & Taxes

Your gross salary and your actual paycheck are two very different numbers, and the gap is full of brackets, FICA, withholding and deductions that are easy to get wrong. These calculators turn a wage into real take-home pay, estimate your federal income tax, and handle the special cases — overtime, bonuses, self-employment tax and W-4 withholding — using the current US rules.

Each tool shows the math behind the result, with 2025 tax brackets and the standard deduction built in. Use them to compare a job offer, convert between hourly and salary, check your paycheck, or plan how much to set aside for taxes if you're self-employed. These are estimates for planning, not tax advice.

  • Estimate take-home pay after federal tax, FICA and deductions
  • Calculate federal income tax with 2025 brackets and the standard deduction
  • Convert hourly to salary and back, including overtime pay
  • See how a bonus is taxed (the 22% supplemental rate) and what lands in your account
  • Figure self-employment tax (15.3% Social Security + Medicare) for 1099 income
  • Check your W-4 withholding and add up state and local sales tax

❓ Frequently asked questions

How is take-home pay calculated?

Start with gross pay, subtract federal income tax (based on your bracket and the standard deduction), then FICA — 6.2% Social Security and 1.45% Medicare — plus any state tax and pre-tax deductions. What remains is your take-home pay.

Why is my bonus taxed so much?

Bonuses are supplemental wages, usually withheld at a flat 22% federal rate, plus FICA and state tax. That's withholding, not your final tax — if it's more than you owe, you get it back at filing.

How much should I set aside for self-employment tax?

Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security up to the wage base + 2.9% Medicare) on net earnings, on top of income tax. Many freelancers set aside 25–30% of profit to cover both.

What's the difference between hourly and salary?

Hourly pay multiplies your rate by hours worked (with overtime past 40 hours/week), while salary is a fixed annual amount. Our hourly-to-salary calculator converts between them using a standard 2,080-hour work year.
