The most common mistake is confusing a US (short) ton with a metric tonne. A US ton is 2,000 lb (about 907 kg); a metric tonne is 1,000 kg (about 2,205 lb) — roughly a 10% difference. On a freight or scrap quote that gap is real money. (There's also a UK "long ton" of 2,240 lb, but US shipping almost always means the short ton.) The other classic slip is reading ounces as fluid ounces — this tool handles weight (mass) ounces only, not volume.
