New York Sales Tax Calculator

Figure the tax, the total, or the pre-tax price for any U.S. state or city rate

New York's state sales tax rate is 4%, but shoppers almost always pay more because every county and many cities layer on their own local tax. The average combined rate statewide is 8.54% (Tax Foundation, 2025), though the exact amount you owe depends entirely on where the purchase takes place.

New York City carries the highest rate in the state: 8.875% — that is the 4% state portion plus a 4.5% city surcharge and an additional 0.375% Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) levy. By contrast, a rural county with only the minimum local add-on might charge 7% or 7.5% combined. Rates across the state's 62 counties range from about 4% (state only, rare edge cases) up to 8.875%.

Worked example: Buy a $100 item in New York City and you pay $8.88 in sales tax (8.875% rounded), for a total of $108.88. The same $100 item in Albany County (8% combined) costs $108.00.

Not everything is taxable. New York exempts most unprepared groceries — produce, meat, dairy, and bread bought at a store are sales-tax-free. Clothing and footwear priced under $110 per item are also exempt from the state 4% tax, though some counties do apply local tax to those items. Prepared restaurant meals, candy, soft drinks, and most services are fully taxable.

Practical example — New York

A $500 electronics purchase in New York City (8.875%) adds $44.38 in sales tax, bringing the total to $544.38 — noticeably more than the same purchase in a county at the 7% combined rate, which would add only $35.00.
