Utah Sales Tax Calculator

Figure the tax, the total, or the pre-tax price for any U.S. state or city rate

Utah imposes a state base sales tax of 4.85% on most tangible goods and many services. However, the state mandates an additional 1.25% local rate, making the effective minimum statewide rate 6.10%. On top of that, counties and cities layer their own optional taxes, pushing the average combined rate to 7.19% according to the Tax Foundation — and some areas of Salt Lake County or Utah County can reach 8% or higher.

Not every purchase is taxed at the full rate. Groceries (unprepared food) carry a reduced combined rate of roughly 3% — made up of a 1.75% state portion plus the mandatory 1.25% local add-on. Prepared or restaurant food is taxed at the full rate. Prescription drugs are exempt.

Worked example: If you buy a $100 jacket at a Salt Lake City store where the combined rate is 7.75%, you'd pay $7.75 in sales tax for a total of $107.75. Using the Utah average of 7.19%, that same $100 purchase adds $7.19 in tax.

Sales tax in Utah is collected at the point of sale by the retailer and remitted to the Utah State Tax Commission. Online purchases shipped to a Utah address are also subject to Utah sales tax under economic nexus rules. To use this calculator, enter the purchase price and the applicable rate for your location — the Utah average (7.19%) is prefilled as a practical starting point.

Practical example — Utah

A $500 electronics purchase in Salt Lake City (combined rate ~7.75%) costs $538.75 after tax. Using the statewide average of 7.19%, the same item would total $535.95.
