📌 About Auto & Vehicle

A car is one of the biggest things most Americans buy on credit, and the sticker price is only the start — financing, depreciation, fuel and even tire size all change what you really pay. These calculators cover the whole ownership picture: estimate a monthly loan or lease payment, find out how much car you can actually afford on your budget, see how fast a vehicle loses value, and compare the running cost of gas versus an EV.

Each tool uses the standard formula and a worked example in US dollars, miles and gallons. Use them before you walk into a dealership, when you are deciding between buying and leasing, or to budget the true monthly cost of driving — and treat the financial results as estimates, not financial advice.

  • Estimate a monthly auto loan or lease payment, and check a refinance
  • Find how much car you can afford from your budget and down payment
  • See how much value a car loses to depreciation each year
  • Calculate gas mileage (MPG), trip fuel cost and cost per mile
  • Compare the cost to charge an EV against filling a gas tank
  • Check tire size, overall diameter and speedometer error

❓ Frequently asked questions

How much car can I afford?

A common guideline is to keep your total car payment under about 10–15% of your take-home pay, with 20% down and a term of 60 months or less. The car affordability calculator works backward from your monthly budget to a max price.

Is it better to lease or buy a car?

Leasing usually means a lower monthly payment but no ownership and mileage limits; buying costs more per month but you keep the car. Compare the lease payment (depreciation + finance charge) against the loan payment for the same vehicle.

How fast does a car depreciate?

A typical new car loses around 20% of its value in the first year and roughly 15% a year after that, so it is worth less than half its sticker price by year five. The depreciation calculator shows the curve for your numbers.

Is an electric car cheaper to run than gas?

Usually yes per mile: charging at home is often $0.04–0.06 per mile versus $0.10–0.15 for gas, though public fast-charging costs more. The EV charging cost calculator compares them for your rates.
